Show notes

In this episode, Nick Anderson shares his unconventional journey from high school dropout to banking executive to CEO of One Accord, a management consulting firm that's been helping businesses navigate transition and growth for 25 years. Nick reveals the #1 constraint killing most businesses—owner dependence—and explains how he's solving it in his own company using fractional executives. He breaks down the real order of operations for scaling: revenue first, then operations, then marketing. Nick candidly discusses the challenges of growing a business, from the loneliness of entrepreneurship to the fear of spending on marketing that might not work. He shares wisdom on why most aspiring entrepreneurs fail (no plan, wrong people, or lack of disciplined execution) and emphasizes that business is fundamentally about earning strangers' money by delivering value that exceeds what they pay. Whether you're a solopreneur trying to build a team or a growing company stuck at a revenue ceiling, Nick's practical insights on building systems, hiring fractionally, and focusing relentlessly on revenue will help you break through to the next level.

The complete conversation, in order. 1,166 words.

[00:00:00] Hector: Hey. So if you have a podcast and are spending a lot of time and not seeing a return for your business,

[00:00:05] Hector: I want you to stick around 'cause I'm gonna show you a few mistakes that you're likely making

[00:00:08] Hector: now. My name is Hector Sania Steon, and I've spent much of the last decade trying to figure out how to produce a profitable podcast.

[00:00:15] Hector: And over that time I've published thousands of episodes that have been downloaded millions of times, and most importantly have led to millions of dollars in revenue.

[00:00:23] Hector: I've been able to help brand new shows generate revenue right out of the gate.

[00:00:26] Hector: and I've also seen a lot of things that have held a lot of shows back.

[00:00:29] Hector: now, if you wanna skip through this and just get help from me and my team, you can go to amplify media.com/profit and sign up for a free profitability session.

[00:00:37] Hector: Now the big problem is, is that a lot of businesses start a podcast and they think that the traditional model or the usual model that they see all the other big podcasts do is going to work for them or actually gonna drive revenue for them, and that couldn't actually be farther from the truth.

[00:00:53] Hector: And so on this video, we're gonna cover the three biggest mistakes that a lot of businesses make,

[00:00:57] Hector: that, hold them back from creating real revenue and driving real business development.

[00:01:01] Hector: Okay, so let's get into the three mistakes that most businesses make. The first is, is that they don't position themselves correctly.

[00:01:09] Hector: the second is that they're promoting it in the wrong place, and the third is that they haven't picked a clear profit path.

[00:01:14] Hector: And so let's talk about

[00:01:16] Hector: profit path because there are a few routes that work for businesses and we're gonna

[00:01:21] Hector: talk about it in a lot more detail on another video. But you can use a podcast for what we call thought leadership or to help you position yourself in your industry as someone that

[00:01:31] Hector: other people look to in a particular niche or in a particular expertise.

[00:01:36] Hector: You might also utilize a podcast to do direct business and sales development. These are called account-based podcasts or account-based media. And basically what it does is it allows you to interview and get in front of ideal prospects and ideal clients. And of course there are people that treat it.

[00:01:54] Hector: Sort of like a timeshare and I wouldn't encourage you to do that. Uh, but there are ways that you can create a really great experience for your guests

[00:02:02] Hector: and open the door for a lot of opportunities and a lot of partnerships because of the podcast and the conversations that you are having. And so that is another path.

[00:02:12] Hector: SEO and social media is another profit path. If you have a established way to drive revenue from social media or SEO is a part of your al or or SEO is already a part of your marketing plan, then podcasts can help to really boost that and give that another lift

[00:02:28] Hector: and then the last path is selling directly to your listeners. And this can be a great path if you've established a sizable enough audience. But what we recommend is utilizing and leveraging the first few paths before relying on selling directly to your audience.

[00:02:43] Hector: Now the reason that so many shows struggle if they do have a profit path, and they have decided which way they're gonna utilize, a lot of them really are challenged because of the way that they are positioned themselves. And we have a whole process when we launch our shows. But you really wanna make sure that you are speaking to the right people and that clarity on who.

[00:03:02] Hector: Who it is that you're trying to reach is really there. Also, the perspective and the unique position that you are bringing to the conversation, whether that's your experience, your expertise, uh, your unique frameworks, those things are really, really important to highlight when it comes to positioning. Uh, but you wanna make sure that your not only talking to the right people, but you're making sure that you're talking about the things that they are interested in hearing.

[00:03:28] Hector: And if you have that nailed down and you're positioned the right way, well, now the last part is making sure that you are promoted in the right sort of way, and that you're promoted not only in the right way, but also in the right places to the right people. And it depends on the show and it depends on the industry.

[00:03:44] Hector: Maybe it's important for you to be really. Viable on Instagram or TikTok because of your niche and your industry. Maybe it's LinkedIn, maybe it's Facebook, maybe it's X. There are different places that you can stand out and there are different features and ways to leverage those platforms to make sure that you are being seen by the right types of people.

[00:04:05] Hector: But when you have these three things, when you've figured out the route that you are going to leverage and utilize and you've, and you've figured out what your profit path is, and you are positioned correctly. Well, you don't need it to get in front of very many people, especially when you have a business or a, a product or a service that serves people in a, in a high value capacity, right?

[00:04:29] Hector: In a way that, um, is really, doesn't require you to generate hundreds or thousands of clients from the podcast.

[00:04:37] Hector: Of course, if you sell a product or a widget that is. Lower, you know, lower priced, this strategy might not be the best for you, but if you are a service provider, if you are a, a business, a consultant, someone who relies on creating and establishing trust with their clients, I.

[00:04:57] Hector: Then this is an absolute fantastic route and a, and, and a great method for you to be able to, uh, reach those people and develop that trust at scale, uh, without having to necessarily, uh, shake their hands and be on one-on-one calls, uh, with all of them. So

[00:05:12] Hector: hopefully you got some value out of that. Uh, I would encourage you to drop any of your questions into the comments below, and I'll come back and try and answer those.

[00:05:20] Hector: And again, if you want to sit down with me or my team, you can go to amplify media.com/profit and, uh, schedule your free session there. But, uh, have a wonderful and amazing day, and most importantly, keep publishing.
