The complete conversation, in order. 1,603 words.

[00:00:00] Les McDaniel: Hello, and welcome to the Bearded Wisdom Podcast. I am your loving, caring. Totally amazing host Les McDaniel, who is today concluding his role as the driving instructor, the auto mechanic, the crew chief, all that kind of stuff.

[00:00:16] Les McDaniel: As we begin to find out what it looks like to know your setting when it comes to the five years plus reverse as we travel down this road, we call life. Okay. It's a highway. It's a big, really big highway that we all travel down. However, this is a show to inspire the uninspired to unstick what is stuck and to liberate that leader within you.

[00:00:38] Les McDaniel: But before we start that engine, that is you to go too far down the highway. We gotta know where we're going folks. And I wanna remind you that where we're going is we're trying to encourage you to join us. Join us on our social channels at Instagram and Facebook at Epic fusion dot. For TikTok and YouTube at Bearded Wisdom and like I always say YouTube, maybe not always, but every once in a while I say YouTube is the place where you can actually see some of.

[00:01:05] Les McDaniel: Things we're talking about in action, popping up on the screen, helping you, guiding you where you can hit pause journal a little bit, but you could also do the same when you're on the road. You just gotta take mental notes. just be really good about memorizing the notes that you are taking in your head and, and just don't lose them because.

[00:01:22] Les McDaniel: You know, what can I say? Or listen to the podcast and then go back and watch it and fast forward it to each of the slides so you can get a good feel for what we're talking about. And make sure that you are capturing the essence of the growth that is possible when you understand your tendencies. And we're gonna talk a lot about today, about know your setting, learning to connect in the right space and in the right way.

[00:01:43] Les McDaniel: That's where we are off to the races today. So let me just tell you something guys. There's this thing in life called work life balance that people think is something that can be attained. and while we're gonna talk about work-life balance, I really want you to understand that this is about work life balancing.

[00:02:04] Les McDaniel: You know, we're always shifting gears and we have the reverse in effect because we understand that we're not ever gonna be in a place where we're completely balanced in our life. We have may have moments, but, but being balanced in life is not necessarily exactly what we've always been. You see, work life balance isn't solely about the time you spend.

[00:02:24] Les McDaniel: It's also about the importance of your mindset and the mindset of a person changes the ni dynamics of every relationship that we have. You see, when we talk about the notion of work life balance, what we're often referring to is the amount of time that we are spending in each of those categories.

[00:02:42] Les McDaniel: And yet it's not necessarily true that if I spend, you know, four hours at work and four hours at life or at home, that there's somehow a balance that equates. You see, this is all about the connections and how we connect intentionally. I can tell you a story about how as my wife started to get ill and not feel too great, there was this moment where we were watching a lot of TV at night.

[00:03:07] Les McDaniel: I mean, I would finish my day. Turn into a, a pumpkin and go sit on the couch and just stare at the tube with her. And we had some great shows we were watching. I mean, we, we love, we love watching Good series. There's no question about it, but this was our life for a few months and we're like, Wait, in a second, we need to do something different.

[00:03:26] Les McDaniel: Like we became empty nesters this year. And so what does it look like to make sure that, that the time we're spending with one. It doesn't mean that we eliminate that, that opportunity for us to sit and watch TV series, which we enjoy doing together and laughing about it and talking and, and engaging in what's really happening in the, in the, the TV shows.

[00:03:47] Les McDaniel: It's not about that. It's about. Being able to spend that time with her, that really builds into that second gear connection. And so we established kind of a pattern and a routine that we're still working on imperfectly to where we kind of start out our morning sitting out on the back porch, though it's getting colder, so we'll not, we'll see if that continues in that way.

[00:04:07] Les McDaniel: But to sit with each other in the morning to spend some time in second gear connecting, making sure that we hug each other and kiss each other every morning and say, Good morning and I love you. And, and sharing in that time and, and spending time in, in other ways where we go out on dates or we go for walks or we try to find ways that, that we can make sure that we are developing that relationship in very powerful ways.

[00:04:31] Les McDaniel: Same goes for my kids. I work with my. And I wanna make sure that she knows that she's really my daughter first and foremost, and never that she is the, the person that, that I'm in charge of or that she's in charge of me or that there's some sort of thing that she could do in our work life that would ever destroy this thing that we have, that this bond is father and daughter.

[00:04:52] Les McDaniel: And so we have to understand that is our mindset around this whole notion of work life balance or balance. That is really critical to what we do moving forward. And so how we're gonna go about this, maybe a little bit complex to do over a podcast, but we're gonna make an attempt and I think that you can do it.

[00:05:14] Les McDaniel: I think you can. I think you can. I think you can. And we're gonna focus in on the setting. And the people that are there, and we're gonna try to define what is going on inside of each of of these. We're gonna call them settings and what gear would be applied to that. So we're gonna, this can include yourself, family, team, organization, community, and the location will be random.

[00:05:42] Les McDaniel: You're gonna see. And you're gonna be able to go through this later on, look at this or listen to it in slow motion, and I'll try to go at a, at a reasonable pace so that we're not here too long so that you can begin to tap into mastering your settings, because we gotta practice this stuff. If we, if we wanna create triggers and habits that allow us to make these shifts cleanly, we gotta become more clear about these different gears.

[00:06:08] Les McDaniel: So as we move into this section of mastering your settings, I want you to understand your time, looking at when you do what you do and. With yourself, your family, your team, and the whole goal here is to know and understand that we all get up, take showers, drive, work, play, but we all do it differently.

[00:06:28] Les McDaniel: And if you don't understand the differences of those things that you share in life with those that you love and and understand kind of how they like to maneuver into each of these gears, then you will get disconnected. Being in the wrong gear at the wrong time can truly be detrimental to that work life balance.

[00:06:46] Les McDaniel: So this exercise is really all about putting the settings into place. So what do you think is the most appropriate and healthy gear for each of the following settings? All right. , take a middle night note and then we're gonna test this quiz in the end. All right? When you wake up, what gear do you put there?

[00:07:08] Les McDaniel: Your early morning routine breakfast, your hygiene, your drive time, your work. Your break. You work again, you have lunch. , you work some more and then there's a break. You work again, and then you drive home, and then you have dinner, and then there's family personal time, and then you have a late night routine and you have sleep.

[00:07:50] Les McDaniel: So go ahead and if you're here and you've written all those down, Put the most appropriate gear for that particular section. And let's see. You could pause it here cause I'm gonna move forward now. Send this to a friend. Guys, this is a, If this has been valuable to you, send this to someone that you know needs to learn a little bit more about the five years. This is something that you don't hold onto for yourself, but it is truly something that can begin to impact those that you love and that you lead on a day-to-day basis.

[00:08:17] Les McDaniel: We'll talk to you soon. Bye-bye.
