Transcript Nick (Host): Rob Johnson, I’m excited to have you on the Seven Figure Advisor podcast. Lots of great stuff is going to come out today. To start, tell me: how did you get into the industry, and do you consider yourself a financial advisor or financial planner? Rob (Guest): I’d say I’m more of a financial planner. Planning is more encompassing—creating solutions for clients and mapping out the future. Getting into the industry was never my original plan. I thought I’d be a CIO coming out of college. My father was in the industry for a long time, more on the life insurance side. I always said I would never do it because he worked very hard, was always busy, and I missed a lot of things growing up while he was building his business. After college I spent about two years in other industries. I realized my dad had been successful and had never been laid off. I also realized I enjoyed working with people. After a lot of convincing, I decided to take a closer look. I’ve been in the business 21 years now, and I’m very happy I made the decision. Nick (Host): I love the juxtaposition: “definitely not” turning into “let’s see.” How does that part of your story make you a better planner today? Rob (Guest): It reminds me that the plans we make for ourselves don’t always go the way we expect. That’s what financial planning is: you work toward a goal, but things outside your control happen and you have to pivot. My pivot was realizing that other roles I considered often came with layoffs, relocation, or instability. Planning requires being versatile and nimble to still reach the ultimate goal. Nick (Host): What was the moment that made you feel this path was right for you? Rob (Guest): Seeing clients retire and seeing the impact. One client in particular had never saved. Because we met—at a school setting—and because of the guidance and nudges I gave, that client was able to retire within a few years. They told me, “I never would have saved this money if you hadn’t introduced yourself.” That made me realize how many people just need a nudge and a plan to retire with dignity. Nick (Host): That’s powerful. Tell me about your business today—how do you focus? Rob (Guest): Early in my career I wanted to work with everyone. You want to build your reputation and learn. Now I’m more specific. I focus on people close to retirement, especially what I call the “fragile 10”—five years before retirement and five years after. That’s a high-impact window. Nick (Host): What helped you thrive early on, especially as a younger advisor working with older clients? Rob (Guest): Confidence in knowing that this is what I do for a living. Clients come to you because they need guidance. Also, working with educators early on was meaningful. We used to say we were “educating the educators.” They taught us foundational skills; we get to teach them about retirement plans, pensions, investments, and planning. Nick (Host): What levers have been most important to grow your business? Rob (Guest): Hiring an assistant was one of the best investments. My strengths are sitting with clients, solving problems, and guiding decisions. If I’m doing scheduling, answering phones, and administrative tasks, it reduces my impact. Nick (Host): How do you structure your schedule? Rob (Guest): Flexibility is one of the biggest advantages of owning a practice. I have two kids, and I prioritize balance. I often treat Fridays as a personal day—maybe some planning and review, but also time for hobbies and recovery. Originally, when my second child was born, I had less time, so I decided to use four days to see the same number of people I would have seen in five. I found I became more focused and efficient. Nick (Host): Many people would say, “I can’t do that yet.” What belief helped you make leaps? Rob (Guest): Taking the leap—while being thoughtful about risk. You can’t always wait until you feel ready. Sometimes you commit and then you figure it out. I also believe in following proven systems rather than trying to reinvent everything. Nick (Host): Great. Rob, thank you for sharing your story and your perspective on planning, impact, and building a sustainable practice.
